Almost black, until the light catches it.

Marcgravia sp. ‘El Coca’ has a blue-green sheen across its dark leaves, red undersides, and new growth that comes in red before darkening as it matures.

You might know Marcgravia for their small leaves growing flat against a tree or terrarium wall. This is the mature form, with much larger leaves hanging from branches that grow out sideways. ‘El Coca’ can develop these branches while still quite small. Ours have even done it without anything to climb.

Care

Grown in high humidity. If moving to ambient household conditions, acclimate gradually.

Honestly, not a beginner plant. At its best in a terrarium, vivarium, greenhouse, or humid grow tent.

Humidity — 75%+ is where this plant becomes genuinely easy. Ambient household humidity could be possible but noticeably harder; you'll be misting and watering a lot.

Light — bright indirect or strong LED. Handles high grow-light output well; we've seen no bleaching under our LEDs. Skip harsh direct sun.

Water & substrate — bark and sphagnum, well-draining. Keep the mix moist. Frequent misting is welcome. In our substrate we haven't seen overwatering issues, but that's dependent on drainage.

Growth — branches on its own and responds well to pruning if you want to shape or propagate further.

Propagation — patience. Sometimes they root quickly, sometimes they take their time. Keep the humidity high while it establishes and you should be good to go!
